Lasik Cost

After a new service or product has been out on the market for awhile, you’d expect the price to drop. Especially if the service becomes easier to get and is available in a larger part of the country or world. LASIK cost has not followed this observation. The price has remained steady or even increased. The only reason for this seems to be that the technology for this eye surgery has continued to improve and the cost of new training and new equipment has led the LASIK cost of eye surgery.

The main factor in deciding LASIK cost is what type of eye surgery and the laser and other tools needed for that particular eye surgery. Using a laser instead of a knife increases the cost significantly. There are different lasers used for LASIK and the best, newest lasers are of course the most expensive. You pay for cutting edge technology.

The newer lasers approved for LASIK are the Allegro Wave laser, excimer laser which is really a grouping of lasers and the IntraLase. With each new laser technology, there is new training for the doctor, new procedures, and new equipment. The costs are then passed on to the consumer.

The older technology, or the laser machines in use before adopting cutting edge technology, are then sold to other eye surgeons. Since the cost of these lasers is much cheaper than buying a new one, you’d expect the price to be much lower at that office. That is not the case. LASIK cost seems to be steady and only the eye surgeon is getting the benefit of that cheaper laser because the savings are not passed to the consumer. This is probably because the life of that laser in the eyes of the public will not last too much longer. Everyone wants newer technology, especially technology that may do a better job with less side effects.

Even though LASIK cost can be a little high for most people, don’t automatically get eye surgery from the cheapest place. Research the different types of lasers and find out what types you could live with. Then research doctors in the area that perform that type of eye surgery. Talk to previous patients, look on the web and see if there are any complaints about that eye surgeon or that type of laser. Once you have it narrowed down, make your decision. Your vision is more important than choosing the cheapest eye surgery type and cheapest office.
