LASIK Eye Surgery
LASIK eye surgery was developed to provide an alternative to eyeglasses and contacts. This eye surgery does achieve that feat quite well. This surgery is available to anyone that passes the medical tests, but the success rate is higher with near sighted than far sighted visions. More than 90% of all LASIK eye surgery patients achieve significant vision corrections. 98% of patients can drive without eyeglasses or contacts after surgery.
LASIK eye surgery consists of an excimer laser reshaping the cornea of the eye. Tissue is vaporized with the laser which corrects the incorrect eye shape. Light is then focused correctly to the back of the eye and vision is corrected. It does not hurt or take very long either. Anesthetic eye drops are put in the eyes and a vacuum holds the eyes in place. After surgery you will have to wear goofy moon goggles for 24 hours. Your vision will be corrected immediately though. You’ll need to go back the next day to get placer contacts removed. These clear contacts are placed on the eyes after surgery to hold the corrections. It will take about 4 days for the eyes to feel better. It may take months to get rid of dry eye from the surgery. The surgery itself only takes 20 minutes.
This eye surgery technology was developed in 1990, but the idea is from the 1940s. It wasn’t until 1992 that the LASIK eye surgery technology was fully developed and surgeries on eyes became available. Millions of people around the world are choosing to give up eyeglasses and contacts with this eye surgery. You’ll find that patients all say they wished they had done the surgery sooner.
Deciding if LASIK eye surgery is a possibility for you depends on your age and medical conditions. You must be at least 18 years old and if older than 55, then it may not be a possibility for you. You’ll need to check with the doctor and they will do some tests to see if the eye surgery will work on your vision problems.
General health conditions and eye problems should be brought up to the doctor. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding then this surgery will have to be postponed. Take in an information seminar or call a LASIK surgery center with your questions. There is no better source for information than the LASIK clinic itself.
